Common questions
How is this different from just using ChatGPT?
ChatGPT has no parent visibility, no progress tracking, and no structured curriculum — and it hands over answers. Alongside builds a learning profile of your child over time and uses it in every session, and it guides instead of telling.
How does Ally make sure my child actually learns it?
It’s the most important design decision we made. Ally uses the Socratic method — asking guiding questions that lead your child to the answer themselves, then checking they can do the next one on their own. Students remember far more when they reason their way to it than when they’re simply told.
Is this a full curriculum, or just a chatbot?
Both — that’s the whole point. Alongside is a complete, sequenced middle-school curriculum in Math, Science, English, and Social Studies (lessons, practice, and unit tests), with a 1-on-1 AI tutor built in that teaches alongside it and keeps a learning profile of your child. You get the structure of a real course and the help of a personal tutor.
Is it safe? What happens to my child’s data?
You create and control every child account. You can enable chat review per child — your child is told when it’s on, because trust matters. If a conversation ever raises a serious safety concern, you’re alerted right away. Ally is disabled during graded tests, and we never sell student data.
Is there a limit on how much my child can use the AI tutor?
Coursework never has a meter — lessons, their built-in quizzes, and all unit and course tests are always unlimited. Open-ended AI tutoring (chat, extra practice and on-demand quizzes) includes a generous monthly allowance per child that’s plenty for daily use. In the rare case a child uses it all, you can top up from your dashboard at our cost — we don’t mark up top-ups.
My child goes to a regular school — is this still for us?
Yes. Most of the day-to-day use is after school: your child brings Ally the homework they were already assigned and works through it with them, or asks about whatever they covered in class that day. The curriculum is there when you want it — to pre-teach a unit before it comes up, or to go back and fix something that never quite landed. Mastery tracking shows you a weak topic early, instead of at report-card time.
What if my child is using a different curriculum?
Alongside is a complete curriculum on its own — but Ally happily helps with outside work too. Bring Ally any problem from any textbook and it will work through it with your child, or just ask about whatever they’re studying.
Does Alongside work with my state’s standards?
Yes — families in all 50 states use the same complete curriculum, built on nationally recognized standards. Alongside generates the records homeschool families actually need: a progress report, an attendance log, and a standards coverage report organized topic by topic and framed for your state. In states that publish their own standards, the topic-level report is designed to read naturally alongside your state’s documents. Set your child’s state and Ally also keeps your state’s expectations in mind while tutoring.
