Privacy Policy

Alongside Tutor is operated by Alongside Learning LLC ("we," "us," or "our").
The quick version
A parent owns the account; children never register themselves. We collect what we need to run the tutor — account info, payment info (via Stripe), and your child's learning activity. We use trusted service providers (Stripe, AWS, Anthropic) to operate the Service. We do not sell your or your child's personal information, and we do not show third-party advertising. You can review or delete your child's data at any time.1. Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains what information Alongside Tutor collects, how we use and protect it, and the choices you have. It applies to our website, web app, and related services. By using the Service you agree to this policy. The Service is intended for residents of the United States.
2. Information we collect
From parents (account holders):
- Name and email address
- A password you set
- Email and notification preferences
- Billing information processed by Stripe (we receive your billing status; we do not store full card numbers)
About students (entered or controlled by the parent):
- First name or nickname, login username, grade level, U.S. state, and (optionally) school name
- Voice/accessibility preferences
- Learning activity: lesson progress, quiz and test answers and scores, skill mastery, XP, coins, and streaks
- Messages your child sends to the AI tutor and the tutor's responses, and photos of homework your child chooses to upload
Collected automatically:
- Basic device, browser, and session information needed to keep you logged in and to operate the Service securely
- Limited security information used to protect your account
- Information you submit in an issue or bug report
3. How we use information
We use information to provide and personalize the tutoring experience, generate lessons and AI feedback tailored to your child's grade and progress, process your subscription, keep accounts secure, send transactional and (if enabled) progress emails to parents, respond to support requests, and improve and maintain the Service. We do not use your child's personal information to serve third-party advertising, and we do not use your child's personal information to train AI models.
5. Children's privacy (COPPA)
Alongside Tutor is intended for use by children in grades 6–8 under the direction of a parent or guardian, and we take children's privacy seriously. Accounts are created and owned by adults; children cannot register themselves. A parent provides verifiable consent at sign-up — including by completing a paid subscription using a credit or debit card — before any child account is used. We collect from children only what is needed to provide the educational service (such as a first name, grade, learning progress, and answers or questions they enter), and we do not condition a child's participation on disclosing more than is reasonably necessary.
A child's AI conversations are private to the child by default. A parent can opt in to view them (this is off unless you turn it on). We keep the conversations themselves only for the current calendar month, and then delete them — see section 8. As a parent, you can review the personal information we have collected from your child, ask us to delete it, and refuse to permit further collection — by emailing support@alongsidetutor.com. There are no public profiles, no child-to-child messaging, and no behavioral advertising.
6. Your rights and choices
You may access and update your account information, request a copy or deletion of your or your child's data, withdraw consent, and turn off optional emails. To make a request, email support@alongsidetutor.com. We aim to respond within 30 days. Deleting your account removes associated personal data, subject to limited records we must keep for legal or accounting reasons.
7. California and other U.S. state privacy rights
Depending on where you live, state privacy laws — including the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA) — give you additional rights over your personal information: the right to know what we collect and how we use it, to access a copy, to correct it, to delete it, and to not be treated differently for exercising these rights. We do not sell or share your or your child's personal information, and we do not use it for cross-context behavioral advertising. To exercise any of these rights, email support@alongsidetutor.com; we will respond as required by applicable law. You may use an authorized agent where the law allows, and we will not discriminate against you for making a request.
8. Data retention
We keep account and learning data — such as lesson progress, scores, and skill mastery — while your subscription is active, so your child's progress is preserved.
AI tutor conversations are kept for less time. We keep the messages themselves only for the current calendar month. At the start of each month we delete the previous months' conversations and keep only a short summary of each month: how many messages and chats there were, which subjects were discussed, when the first and last activity happened, and how many safety flags were raised. The summary contains none of what was actually said.
If a message matches our safety word list, we keep a record of that flag so you can review and act on it. The quoted text from a flagged message is removed six months after the flag is raised; the record that it happened is kept.
If you cancel, we retain data for a limited period in case you return, and we delete it sooner on request. Deleting your account removes the summaries and safety records described above along with the rest of your child's data. Some records (such as billing records) are kept as required by law.
9. Security
Your data is hosted in the United States, encrypted in transit, and protected by access controls so that each family's information stays separate. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and to limit who can access it.
11. Changes to this policy
If we update this policy, we will change the effective date above and, for material changes, notify account holders by email.
